Strange Tales

                                                     The return of the sin

Lal Bahadur Rai was a lonely person. He was serving as a Ranger in a far eastern region of upper Assam.  The place was not less than seven thousand feet high. It was full of thick forest with few houses nearby. His family lived far away and so he felt too lonely in his highly furnished quarter. A small daughter studied in a nearby Junior High  school in class V. Often he used to visit the school to fetch his daughter for the weekend. I also worked in the school. The Ranger was of a strong personality and hence the Headmaster of the school was under his powerful impact. He used to get a VIP treatment in the school whenever he went to the school to fetch his daughter Sharmila. Now, Sharmila had a senior friend studying in the same school called Pramila who studied in class VII. Pramila was not so attractive but had a bumpy figure which attracted the eyes of the Ranger. Slowly, he made acquaintance with the tall girl whose eyes were just devastating.  The girl was also quite grown up comparing to the class in which she studied and hence was also inclined towards the Rangers roving eyes. One day, the Ranger opined, Pramila! Why don’t you come with us and enjoy few days and then can be back  with Sharmila? While he gave this suggestion the eyes of the Ranger looked towards the Headmaster a cunning and crafty man who always looked for some ways to flatter the Ranger who frequently brought fruits and vegetables for him. The smile of the Head gave the green signal to both and so the three of them walked along the steep path to a slippery mountain.
As I said the Ranger was a lonely fellow who used to sigh for his wife who dwelt far away in some remote village due to some domestic compulsions. For a long time he had been away from the conjugal happiness  and that had kept his soft feelings for the opposite sex bubbling within his big heart. Daughter Sharmila was away busy playing with her neighboring friends and Pramila who was also keen to be near the handsome and tall Ranger  kept herself busy cleaning the tables and chairs while the Ranger was busy reading the already read magazine but whose mind was towards the newly arrived damsel. By the way, the Ranger inquired, what is your ambition? After you pass class VIII you have to decide. I want to be nurse Sir. The girl replied a bit blushingly and she went on with her chores. The Ranger was rather impressed by the gesture of the girl and gave a grin which hid a chivalrous motive  within. He had never met a grown up girl alone in his life and so it was a deeply romantic moment for him. But he knew how to start and so continued, Then you must be very soft hearted and caring because you want to be a nurse. So,  today I have a little headache, please apply  your nursing expertise on me so that I can be assured that you really deserve to be a nurse. So saying the Ranger went on a credulous laugh. The girl looked straight into the eyes of the Ranger and could feel the longing of his lonely heart. I would tell you one thing that hill people are very soft in these matters of heart and they can be easily swayed by a momentary feelings of love. Pramila was also a reserved type of girl and seldom mixed with the boys because of which feelings of romance was buried deep in her heart. But the situation in the mansion of the Ranger helped in to  surge the buried emotions of the two.  Pramila consented to his suggestion and began to massage the head of the ranger who was filled with the joy which he had never felt even when his wife had rubbed his with her delicate hands. Here was a gush of romance which was completely new to this man and the girl too. The man had a nice day and the girl had a first experience of a man’s body which seemed to be the most attractive matter in the whole world. The day went happily with Pramila and Sharmila preparing a hearty dinner in the evening.
The day ends abruptly in the hills and it envelopes the houses and trees with a mysterious blueness which is very rarely found in the  plains. The ranger went to bed that evening early with a romantic mood and so was the case  with the young girl too, who found a solace from the daily routine chores and constant scolding of the Headmaster and his Mistress. After the dinner the three had a nice conversation with stories of long ago and happenings in the school which the Ranger took extreme delight to listen from a cheerful face. Slowly as the night deepened the daughter felt sleepy and went to bed early leaving the two companions to fend for themselves. Once again the massage started with stories of the Rangers career as a forest beat officer. But this time the situation was different where there was nothing to disturb the two longing hearts. The massage and caressing evolved into a never ending romance of the two souls which lasted for an hour. Being satisfied to the core the two went to their respective beds with blissful thoughts. This courting lasted for months together till I was posted in the valley of solitude which I too enjoyed to the hilt with the eye of the great poet William Wordsworth. But life is so mysterious that the worldly joys  do not last forever.  Very soon an accident took place in the life of the Ranger which changed his attitude to his new found love. It happened that a senior teacher in the school had encroached upon the virginity of his daughter Sharmila. The incident created a hue and flutter in the school leading to banishment of a seniormost teacher. But it nevertheless had a deep bearing on the Ranger who then never called Pramila to his quarters. Rather he once confided to her while in the school. Pramila he said in a melancholic style, sin never leaves anyone however powerful  a person is. I spoiled your virginity while you stayed at my quarters. So god had allowed the teacher to do the same to my little child. Although I never did to an innocent child but you are a grown up girl of not less than eighteen. Still you are  a child in god’s view. So he has punished me for the crime which I had done unknowingly and under a situation which was beyond my control. May be there was  some compulsion with the man who spoiled my child’s virginity but the loss is loss anyway there to be seen. The sin has paid me in the same coin.

                                                                     Intimacy

She was lovely and cute. After the hustle and bustle of family environment she was resting on  the steps of a lonely mansion just in front of mine. She was not a human element but a she goat not very old but old enough to know the world of human values. From the way she was resting and caressing herself in the shade of greenery in front of the mansion it  seemed  to convey that she was enjoying privacy as a human being could be expected to do. I too love privacy and caressing myself in solitude is also my nature. Hence I developed a keen interest in the goat which felt that somebody was watching her minutely. I am fond of animals and wild life and have read somewhere that the animals and birds too can communicate if we develop the faculty of mental conversation which I have done during my several years of spiritual persuits. So, I decided to experiment on this new found relationship. In a moment of wishing the same, I felt the goat rather cuty if I give her a name because goat would be an insult to the amiable creature. Cuty and I developed immediately a psychological  contact.  I asked her, well why are you resting  there. She answered :  Children of my mistress are very naughty. They keep on beating me without any cause. The whole family is a volatile mess. My master shouting at his wife and the wife shouting at her husband. The children creating noise without any purpose. So , I felt suffocating  there and so came to rest at peace. But why do you ask me these questions. You seem to be quite happy and contented person  within what it seems from your appearance. Nobody bothers when I am near them and most of them pass me as if I am a nobody. This makes me a little sad. But then this sadness vanishes when I see green and delicate grass around me and then I make myself busy in satisfying my basic  need. The bond between me and Cuty became stronger and stronger. One day when I tried to peep into her mind she was sad and lying in a vacant mood. I asked her,  Cuty! why are you so sad. She said, my mate has deserted me and I long to see him. But he is nowhere to be found. May be his master has sold him to the butcher and he is no more in this world.  I am carrying his baby inside me and I wish that he should be near me when I deliver this child. One thing I tell you. Human beings are no better than the dogs. I said, how you can say so. She continued, sometimes I encounter boys hitting me with their legs although I have done nothing to them. Even the neighborly dogs do  not disturb me when I am peacefully grazing. But you people boast about your humanity which is in vain. You have scant respect for the animals and birds,  then how can you be respectful to your fellow beings. And I know this thing while I am in my mistress’  tin shed. She always speak ill about her neighbors and I seldom hear speak about the good qualities in them. But you are not one of them. I hope that someday you may own me and I can live my life with dignity and peace which I hardly get in my present mistress family. After that I was lost in some distant thought. Suddenly, Cuty came  near me and saw me with so much affection that I could not believe my eyes. Not only this. She also spoke to me in her own beastly language that I could hardly make out. But whatever she said it was full of love and affection. I shall definitely miss Cuty because now I have been transferred to another city where animals like Cuty are rarely to be found.
